The webinar began with the question- ‘What is gender?’ Here the resource person shared the definition of ‘Gender’, as explained by WHO: “Gender refers to the roles, behavior, activities, attributes and opportunities that any society considers appropriate for girls and boys, and women and men.” Thus, sex is what we are born with, and gender is what we’re given. It is

      • Learned
      • Socially constructed
      • Diverse- Culturally different
      • Dynamic and
      • Modifiable

      She further explained topics like-

      • Role of Power in Gender relationship
      • Gender Sensitive Classroom Environment and Interaction
      • Gender Sensitive Pedagogy
      • Gender Sensitive Methodologies and gender Cards.

Further, talking on ‘Gender Equality’, she explained about ‘SDG 5 also.

Gender Equality, is the need of time that there is, Equal treatment for women and men in laws and policies. Also, there is equal access to resources and the society at large.

Gender Equity’, is Fairness and justice in distribution of benefits and responsibilities between women and men.

She explained that, though, different people and cultures have different ideas and beliefs about gender roles and responsibilities, yet, no gender is superior. If given a chance both genders can perform complementary roles.

Gender Relation’, is the Relationship between women and men, acquired through the process of socializationin terms of power sharing, decision – making and division of labour withinthe household and in the society at large.

Gender Roles’, are activities and duties seen suitable for girls and boys in given society, family, culture and religion. Girls and boys learn their assumed roles and duties through their day-to-day interaction with their parents, educators, peers and other people around them. Thus, in a Gender sensitive school, the points written below should be taken care of:

      • Activities should be planned in a way that both, boys and girls, get equal opportunities to participate.
      • Both, girls and boys should be encouraged to jointly plan the school functions and also equally participate in the same.
      • Educator should encourage boys and girls for mutual cooperation in organizing of school programs.

She asserted that anyone can get angry but to be angry with the right person, to the right degree, at the right time, for the right purpose, and in the right way, is not easy. She showcased the vicious cycle of anger that starts with the trigger event which stimulates negative thoughts and ultimately affects our emotional, physical and behavioral responses.  She gave three-steps solution to resolve the anger issues; viz. distract yourself, focus on your breathing and take time to relax.

The resource person also discussed the CBSE circular issued on December 23, 2019, on the topic-‘Making Our School Anger-Free’.  The department as a part of its thrust on ‘Joyful Education and Holistic Fitness,  urged all its affiliated schools and its school leaders to make efforts to convert all CBSE schools into a No-Anger Zone or Anger-free Zone.

She gave the following suggestions for the establishment of Anger Free School-

            1. A signage board-‘This is an Anger-Free Zone’ written on it, should be placed in each corner.
            2. Teachers should continuously monitor atvarious spots in the school campus.
            3. Physical exercises, yoga and meditation should be practised regularly.
            4. Schools should promotethemselves as ‘Anger Free School’ on various social platforms.
            5. Various experiences should be recorded for future references.
            6. Anger management techniques and problem-solving skills should be taught to the students.
            7. Tokens of appreciation to the students, who overcome such situations, should be given to motivate them as well as their peer group.

                                    ART INTEGRATION IN TEACHING

CBSE organized a training session for teachers across the country on 17th August, 2021. The topic was ‘Art Integration in Teaching’. The resource person was Ms. Sriekala Nair. Priya Grover attended this training.

Ms. Nair shared that Art integration is an approach to teaching in which students construct and demonstrate understanding through an art form. Students engage in a creative process which connects an art form and another subject area and meets evolving objectives in both.

She emphasized on accepting art as a medium of the learning process, to give ample opportunities to students to visualize, to engage the students and bring in cultural relevance.

She shared many examples to include visuals to make the learning process easy for students. It was an interesting and informative session.

Role of Theatre and Drama in classroom

                                                              CBSE ONLINE TRAINING

On 12th August, 2021, an online training program was conducted by CBSE CoE Chennaion the topic of ‘Role ofTheatre and Drama in classroom’. The resource person for the session was Dr. Mahesh Kadakkalakath. The session was attended by Mrs. Usha Chauhan of Arwachin International School.

The focus of the session was on the importance of Theatre and Drama in the classroom. He divided the objective of Theatre and Drama in the classroom, into 4 parts, i.e.-

                                            • Self Confidence
                                            • Sharpens Memory
                                            • Fun and Relaxation and
                                            • Importance in education.

He started the session with the quote,

“Tell me and I will forget. Show me and I will remember. Involve me and I will understand.”He further said that classroom creates the best situation in which the students can learn and teachers can teach. Procedural and Instructional technique are used to establish the classroom environment so that learning can occur. He said that it is only in a drama class that a student can (if only for a few moments) become another person, explore new identity, try out and experiment with various personal choices and situations.

“Like all arts, Drama allows students to communicate with and understand others, in new ways.”

The highlights of the talk were:-

                                            • Drama requires Self- control and Discipline that will serve the students well in all the aspects of life.
                                            • No art form is more truly collaborative.
                                            • Drama is an important tool for preparing the students to live and work in a world that is increasingly Team oriented rather than hierarchical.
                                            • Aspects of performing arts, especially improvisations help students to understand how to appraise a situation and think out of the box.
                                            • They learn to believe in their ideas and abilities.

It was indeed a wonderful session with a mindful of learning. The session concluded with a short quiz.

                                                  CONNECTING AND COMMUNICATING WITH PARENTS

                                                  CONNECTING AND COMMUNICATING WITH PARENTS

Due to ongoing pandemic, an online training was provided by COE, Chandigarh on 11th Aug, on a very relevant topic-“Connecting and communicating with parents”.The resource person Dr.KunalAnand(Principal DPS, Udhampur) held an engaging session to involve the participants to remove the obstacles to parents contact. This training was attended by the teachers-Mrs. Rachna Kaur and Mrs. Mansipriya of AIS.

He discussed about the problems teachers face while connecting with parents and reasons why parents often get angry in dealing with teachers. He cited various reasons: it could be due to lack of follow through, unwilling to apologize or admit mistakes, defensiveness of parents, failure to communicate etc. There can be parents of kinds- ‘Enabling parents’- who are overprotective and view their child as fragile. ‘Authoritative parents’- who are bossy and every time tell child what to do. ‘Absent parents’- missing and unattached and makes excuses about their own behaviour and ‘Rational parents’-who are respectful and want their child to be independent thinkers. The strategy to deal with them varies accordingly. Hence teachers while dealing with each one should avoid triggers like worried, angry, upset, sick of problem, tired of, never, annoyed etc. Instead teachers can use caring statements like-“your child matters, “I care about your child”, “your child is important” and can also express disagreement by saying- “I’d like to offer another idea”, “here’s another thought”, “have you ever thought about it?”.

According to Dr.Kunal a teacher should take steps to call parents and ask for their inputs, describe the behaviour specifically, give options and then get to the point. The basic things they should keep in mind is to not make false promises, apologize when wrong, tell the truth about their child, attack the problem not the person and build people up whenever possible.

The session ended with an assessment and comments about the training. It was engrossing and enriching.

Capacity Building Programme in Change Management

“Change is the only constant in the world”

It is not the strongest of the species that survive, nor the most intelligent, but the one most responsive to change.”

Mrs. Surya Laxmi attended the teacher trainingon “Change Management” on 9th August, 2021.

It was conducted by CBSE CoE (Dehradun). The resource person was Mr. Anurodh Chitra.

The resource person highlighted that change is a process of learning new ideas and things. It is learning to do and learning to understand something new. The biggest challenge to any change comes through resistance to change due to the disturbance in the existing equilibrium, procedures, power structures etc. within the system or organization, which may not be liked by many, thus leading to resistance to change.

There are five stages which people need to go through to realize the change successfully. This was explained using the  ADKAR model  developed by Jeff Hiatt.

                                                        1. Building AWARENESS as to why that particular change is needed.
                                                        2. Create DESIRE to support and participate in the change.
                                                        3. Developing KNOWLEDGE as to how to change.
                                                        4. Fostering ABILITY to implement new skills and behaviours.
                                                        5. Providing REINFORCEMENTS to sustain change.

He also highlighted the role of a leader in change and steps for successful change like create the urgency, develop a guiding team, get the vision right, empower action and create short term win.

The session was concluded with an assessment. It was not only an informative session but also a great learning opportunity for teachers.

He also emphasised that experiential learning includes-

                                                          1. Concrete Experience – Experiencing planned event or ‘doing an activity’, like: role plays, interviews etc.
                                                          2. Reflective Observation – Engaging in activities that require the child to step back and look at his experience.
                                                          3. Abstract Conceptualisation – Here, the child reflects back on his experience and use various research methods for other activities.
                                                          4. Active experimentation – On the basis of his observations and experiences the child moulds all the things and creates something new.

Heconcluded the session by saying “Experiential learning is the process of "learning by doing" and is a crucial input for making learning joyful. It was a very informative and wonderful session with multiple choice questions for assessment.
