DEVELOPING SCIENTIFIC TEMPERAMENT

“DEVELOPING SCIENTIFIC TEMPERAMENT”

Science plays a crucial role in the overall development of the human beings and it begins from the childhood, hence to develop scientific temperament among the children COE, Chennai on 30thjuly’ 21 conducted an online training on -How to initiate interest in science and develop scientific temperament in students. This training was provided by the Resource person Mrs. RajeswariMuthu Subramanian. It was attended by our science teacher Mrs.Mansipriya.

As discussed by Mrs. Rajeswari -Science is an integral part of our daily lives, which comes from logical thinking and exploring but to develop the same, students should be encouraged by making science fun, introducing concepts by giving examples from daily life and if possible by a relevant activity that the students can perform on their own. To develop the scientific attitude in them, a pro-science atmosphere can be created, their experiments can be supported by employing games and electronic devices. Also exposing those to innovative scientific ideas, which can help them solve major human problems.

The excitement of doing science comes from pursuing the unknown hence developing scientific temperament in students can develop key skills like problem solving, creativity, critical analysis, teamwork, independent thinking and digital literacy. It motivates them to extend their learning, understand the concepts clearly, become collaborative learners and include technology and art to do meaningful projects. Above all learning becomes a joyful experience for each and every child.

She gave many examples and showed videos of different activities which can be included in teaching at higher levels. Through developing scientific temperament students get an opportunity to think beyond books and continue scientific expedition. The training was well-presented and motivating and ended with an assessment which emphasised on the concepts involved.

''The application of GIS is limited only by the imagination of those who use it."
    - Jack Dangermond

Around 50 students from Classes 10-12 of Arwachin International School participated in Online Summer School on “Usefulness of Remote Sensing & GIS for Environmental Studies”  organized by Indian Institute of Remote Sensing (IIRS), Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), Government of India from July 26-30, 2021.

Students were motivated by their  Physics teacher, Mr. Varun Kumar who constantly encouraged them to be the part of the programme.

The focus of the course was on principles of Remote Sensing & GIS and its applications for environmental studies.

Environment is the life supporting system. But the over-exploitation of natural resources is corroding the vital life support systems. Remote Sensing data & Geographic Information System (GIS) along with some models can be used to monitor and mapping of natural resources and environmental pollution in addition to natural disasters like cyclone, tsunami, avalanche, floods, drought, etc.

The course was intended to engage secondary and higher secondary students to create awareness about Remote Sensing Technology and its use for the study of mother planet Earth and its environment through informative lectures and demonstration. Remote sensing and GIS technology are potential tools to understand the vast environment. Exposing the knowledge of satellite data utilization via GIS and image processing software in environmental science has a great scope as it helped the students to understand the importance of remote sensing and then in career choice.

Each day, there were two online lectures of 45 minutes each: one at 10:00 hrs and another at 12:00 hrs. followed by a quiz held to test the knowledge of students after every session delivered. In total, 10 lectures were given and subsequently 10 quizes were taken.
A certificate was awarded to the attendees with a total score of 55% and above.

                  Joyful Learning of Mathematics

                  Joyful Learning of Mathematics

On July 23, 2021, CBSE organised an online teacher training on the topic- ‘Joyful Learning of Mathematics’. All the teachers(primary wing) of the Mathematics department from Arwachin International School attended the session. The resource person was Mr. Mathews k Thomas, an educational consultant and a master trainer with NCERT, CBSE, NIOS (National Institute of Open Schooling), founder of AIEF(All Indian Educators Forum). His book-Redefining Education - vision for a New India and Gaming with Mathematics, is about the integration of games and real-life applications of Mathematics.

Mr. Thomas emphasized on the use of innovative teaching approach to make Mathematics interesting and applicable in real life. He also highlighted the essential points related to experiential and exponential learning in Mathematics as given in NEP 2020.

He discussed about various games and activities that can make learning of the Mathematics in classroom, a joyful experience for learners without diverting our focus from the learning outcomes.

The resource person indicated that since it is imprinted in a child's mind that Mathematics is tough and boring so inclusion of gamification is very important. He suggested that the educators can do this by giving concrete examples and problem-solving situations to enhance their creativity and engagement. The teachers need to make and use teaching aids like charts, visuals, videos, songs and models, by keeping in mind the concept of multiple intelligence in students. A teacher is successful when the children are able to do things without their presence through play way method and experiential or joyful learning.

Altogether, the session was very interactive and informative.

                              Teaching Strategies in Science

                                                                “Teaching Strategies in Science

On 20thjuly2021, an online training was provided by CBSE for science teachers on methods of teaching science in the classroom, as it helps to create better learning for the students.

The resource person of the webinar was Mr. VivekAwasthi whose approach during the session was on the need to create scientific temperament among the students through different teaching strategies. It was attended by Mansi priya (Science teacher of AIS).

According to Mr. Awasthi, ‘Science is a knowledge earned in orderly manner by observation, research and development’. It establishes a relevant connection between what is taught and learnt in the classroom and what a student sees and relates to its surrounding environment. Hence different methods like Demonstrative method, Project method, Problem Solving method, Social Development method should be used instead of the only Lecture method in science to facilitate and foster the spirit of enquiry among students in all elementary subjects including Physics, Chemistry and Biology.

He gave various examples of how different concepts, formulas, numericals, conversions, reactions and diagrams can be presented in Biology, Chemistry and Physics, to keep the young minds explorative and build complex thinking in them.

To make the students more curious -Hands on learning, Laboratory experience, Nature walk and art integrated learning should be included in teaching strategies to strive smooth development of the thought process as it is important that students learn to question the validity of thoughts and scientific work presented to them.

Overall the workshop was beneficial in understanding how different strategies have roles to play in different aspects of science. It was fruitful to be a part of this session which ended with fundamental questionnaire.

1.While making MCQs the format we should keep in mind to highlight the task in the stem instruction for clarity.

2.Too many options should not be included and use all of the above/none of the above should be used sparingly to avoid confusion.

3.MCQs are suitable for knowledge-based testing rather than theoretical knowledge which should have open-ended questions.

4.Make the options nearly equal in length and don’t repeat same initial words/phrases in each option.

5.Ensure that all options have a parallel grammatical structure.

6.Lastbut not the least, she emphasized that the 3C’s of effective communication includes clarity, correctness and coherence which is the characteristic of a good MCQ format.

The session was very informative and helpful as we can apply it in the present scenario of online classes as well. Teaching and Learning styles

                                              Teaching and Learning styles

An online session on ‘Teaching and Learning Styles’ was organized by CBSE COEBhubaneswar, on13th July 2021. The resource personfor the day was Mr.Vincent Edassery. The session was attended by Mrs. Pathak.

Mr. Edassery told that,Teaching & Learning Styles play a very important role in the development of our Education System, and they both are interrelated.

Teaching style represents those enduring personal qualities and behaviours that appear in how teachers conduct their classes. Teaching styles and tools also vary and typically include giving lectures, holding discussions, role playing, or demonstrating. The goals of teaching styles are as follows:

                                              1. To develop effective classroom management skills,
                                              2. To achieve lesson mastery,
                                              3. To have positive expectations.

The manner in which a student learns is considered as his or her learning style. Learning styles refer to the preferential way in which a student absorbs, processes, comprehends and retains the information. A student may learn best by seeing, hearing, being active, or reflecting, to name a few. The VARKmodel of learning styles suggests that there are four main types of learners:

                                              1. Visual Learners.
                                              2. Auditory Leaners
                                              3. Reading/ Writing Learners.
                                              4. Kinesthetic Learners.

Mr. Edassery focused on the qualities of 21st Century Teachers:

                                              1. They need to be curious, flexible and forward thinking in order to give students what they will need twenty years down the line.
                                              2. The teachers should mould their teaching strategies as per the learning needs of the students.
                                              3. Go digital: be smart and use the smart phones.
                                              4. Innovate new methods of teaching and learning.

He concluded the session with a very beautiful quote:

“A creative teacher can make the class exciting even under the shade of a tree while an uncreative teacher can make the students sleep in an AC classroom”.

It was a very enriching session with bags full of learning.

CBSE COE Delhi East and West organised Training sessions on  '21st Century Skills' and 'Decision making skills in Adolescents'  on July 9 and 13, 2021 for teachers of all CBSE schools. The former session was conducted by Dr. C B Mishra, Principal,Prudence School, Dwarka, Delhi and the latter by Mr. Pankaj Munjal, an eminent educationist.

They appreciated the teachers for taking tremendous efforts to attain the goal of educating students especially during this pandemic.

The focus of the session on '21st Century Skills' was on the need to implement strategies to make our students capable, independent and responsible individuals. He further went on to say that the 21st century jargon is already there in the system , we only need to polish the skills through the internet platform and transform the classroom for a holistic approach with the collaboration of Blended approach, Flip model, etc. He, elated the fact that ‘understanding’ is just one aspect of the teaching learning process, executing it and measuring the learning outcome is what makes it effective and successful.

In the other session on 'Decision making skills in Adolescents', Mr. Munjal said that decision making skill helps us to deal constructively with decisions about our lives. It can teach people how to actively make decisions about their actions in relation to healthy assessment of different options and, what effects these different decisions are likely to have.He asked the teachers to teach them how to work through the steps in decision making and let them make decisions. Frequently teachers and parents may be involved in the process, and they can model appropriate actions. This is also a great opportunity to open communication between teachers and their students.

Mrs.Annapoorna Siddhartha attended these informative sessions with the ardent desire to incorporate these value points for the benefit of the students.

In all, both the sessions were truly informative.

Mrs.Roy informed, that while dealing with a child abusecase, it should be reported to the right channel iePOSCO which deals with the rights of children and is child friendly. It gives

                                                          • police protection,
