      Report on JNESYS 2.0 Program

      A trip to Japan…

It was no less than a dream come true when our honorable principal, Mrs. Gracy Peter announced our names for the JENESYS Exchange Program 2.0A group of six Arwachinians delightfully participated in this program which was a marvelous cultural exchange program of eight days i.e. from 13th Oct 2014 to 21st October. Vrinda Aggarwal (XI-A), Srishti Kishore (XI-A), Akshay Sharawat (XI-A), Piyush Aggarwal (IX-A), Mehak Aggarwal (IX-A) and Kamini Bansal (IX-B) got the opportunity to experience the Japanese culture and lifestyle. Before our visit we had many preconceptions about Japan and its culture, thus, we were looking forward to our visit with excitement at its peak.

On our arrival in Japan we were given a warm and hearty welcome by the soft spoken coordinators and the other people. We visited many places like the Edo Tokyo Museum, Dazaifu Tenmangu  Shrine, Hataka Station, etc and experienced painting the Uso Bird.

What we observed there was that people are always ready for the frequently occurring disasters in Japan and always follow an action plan. We were made to do mock drills so that we could cope with them in case of an emergency. People there show their utmost concern for cleanliness. One cannot see even a speck of dust on the roads and the traffic management is also quite impressive. Also, one of the habits which we need to inculcate is waste segregation which is eco-friendly. The best part was the home stay program where we were given the privilege to stay at the house of a Japanese family, and experience their lifestyle, the custom they follow, religious beliefs and the ambience which never let us feel lonely. And finally, we observed that the Japanese people follow their customs and beliefs strictly. Even though they have developed tremendously till date but they haven’t forgotten their culture and have preserved it from the foreign influence. They have proved that “Modernity blends with culture”.

Undoubtedly, it was the best learning experience so far and we bade farewell to the “Land of the rising sun” with tears in our eyes. Their affection, love, discipline, punctuality, kindness- all touched our hearts deeply.

      Mehak Aggarwal IX-A & Srishti Kishore XI-A

           DIWALI SPECIAL ASSEMBLY

         Date : 21st October,2014

ARWACHIN INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL celebrated the festival of Diwali on 21st October, 2014. The function was graced by the Director Mr. Sharma and the Principal Mrs. Gracy Peter. The programme was hosted by Ridhima and Arpita of VIII-B. The auspicious occasion of Diwali started with the lighting of the lamp by the Director and the Prinicipal.

The cultural programme started with the depiction of an act showing ‘Lord Rama’s Return to Ayodhaya’, an episode from the immortal tale of Ramayana. The programme proceeded with the joyous celebration of the return of Lord Rama along with Sita and Lakshmana through a dance followed by a duet performance on the song ‘Mile Hai Chirago Ke…... Then Arwachinians presented a song ‘Light the World’ which gave us a message that the true joy is when you see someone else smile. So everyone joined them together by promising themselves to try their best to destroy the evil and spread goodness all over the Earth.

The celebration of Diwali is not simply about lighting diyas, igniting the rockets and bursting crackers, but it’s also the time to be safe from the fireworks and all the sparklers. So, the next programme was again an act acquainting everyone with the threat that celebrations of Diwali poses to our environment. It also sensitized us to the harm caused from crackers. The children were very excited and they expressed their excitement and enthusiasm through a song Deva Shree Ganesha. Last but not the least, was a wonderful dance performance which thrilled the audience and filled the auditorium with the thunder of applauds for all the participants.

In the end, our Director  Mr. Sharma appreciated and encouraged all the students and teachers for their efforts. He laid stress on celebrating an eco-friendly diwali. Our Principal Mrs. Peter thanked Mr. Sharma for his valuable thoughts. Other than celebrating a safe and green diwali, she emphasized that diwali is the time of giving and sharing, the time to catch up with people and moreover, it’s about maintaining relationships.

The Diwali programme was concluded by the  singing of the National Anthem.

A letter exchange with Students in Japan

The Japanese language department of Arwachin International School organised a letter writing activity in the month of October 2014 for the Japanese Language students of class VII.  They had written letters to the children of Junior high school in Japan. In the letters, they introduced themselves, and wrote about their favourite food, hobbies, Japanese language studies and lot of other things.  They also asked them some questions about Japan.  After that, these letters were scanned, and were sent to four junior high schools in Japan along with a class photograph.

In December, we got more than 30 letters back from two of the schools (Hiyoshi Junior High School in Ehime prefecture and Ikoma Junior High School in Nara prefecture).  Japanese students were all pleased to have the messages written by the students of our school and wanted to know more about them.  Hiyoshi Junior high school attached a photo of its students who wrote the letters.  Our students were very happy to receive the replies from Japanese students and are motivated to study Japanese.  It was a heart-warming activity as students of both the countries got a chance to interact with each other.

School Counsellor’s Forum on the –‘Suicide Prevention in School Children’

Research has shown that about half of all lifetime incidence of mental illness manifests by the age of 14. Suicide has been found to be the third leading cause of death amongst adolescents. Thus, early identification and timely intervention hold the key to mental health care. The best way to ensure the psychosocial well-being of children is through an active collaboration between schools and mental health practitioners. Suicide is becoming epidemic with the growing urbanization and this is plaguing the youth as well with even higher percentages of suicidal attempts thus becoming an important public health concern. It is important to understand what prompts such tendencies in young children and how it can be prevented. Children tend to face various adversities in their adolescent years and the capability to deal and withstand the stress, form their attitude and approach to deal with stress in future. Hence, as a crucial part of their environment, schools also need to be equipped with preventing and providing for adequate and timely intervention.

The Counsellor Forum Meet that took place on 1st October 2014 was attended by the school counsellor at Fortis Hospital, Noida. The Meet focused on understanding suicidal behaviours and prevention, intervention and postvention of suicide using the psychosocial and cultural approach. The members of the Forum met with the agenda of discussing cases and enhancing skills. The interactive discussion entailed an elucidation of principles of working with children and adolescents who are recognized as suicide risks, followed by a discussion around specific cases brought forward by the audience. The Forum also discussed how to build a better understanding of the difficulties experienced by school children, the clinical aspects associated with them, and how best we can identify children with these symptoms, devise a treatment plan and facilitate students, teachers and parents work through the difficult times. The meet was followed by a discussion on the recent research paper which updated us on recent techniques and newer skills as part of a continuous learning process.

National level  quiz on Wild Wisdom was organised by WWF at  WWF OFFICE, Lodhi   Road .WWF has been  working in India since 1969 to conserve nature and wild life. It is an initiative by WWF-India in partnership with the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate change and the  Central Board of Secondary Education, which recognizes quiz as a Continuous and Comprehensive Evaluation activity. The theme for this year’s  Quiz was Biodiversity including all life forms found in the forest like trees, plants and animals, and their interactive roles in nature. Trees release oxygen, store carbon, protect the surface soil and fresh water sources, attract rainfall as well as provide home to at least two third of all terrestrial species. Moreover besides having cultural and leisure value, the forest is an integral part of human life. The main aim of the Quiz was to create awareness among the people to stop the degradation of the earth’s natural environment and to build a future in which humans  can live in harmony with nature.

Arnav Gupta and Aniket Mishra of class VIII along with their teacher Ms. Anju Sirohi attended the quiz .
