She suggested that, to support these endeavours, the schools need hybrid or completely digital libraries. Various schools should come forward and create a space to share, collaborate and enrich their collection of books and resources. Besides these, we can also have social book reading clubs and reading rooms for the disadvantaged areas. She also shared information about a variety of useful digital apps for teachers and students like Padlet, Wakelet and Razplus.

At the end, the resource person highlighted the fact that, we as teachers should teach ethical use of information, academic honesty and ill-effects of plagiarism to the students. Altogether, the session was very informative.

                      National Reading Day Celebration-Storytelling Session

                      National Reading Day Celebration-Storytelling Session

                      Classes 1 to 5

Celebrating ‘National Reading Day’ in 19th June 21, primary students of Arwachin International School took part in a live storytelling session by Simi Srivastava, an award-winning storyteller who works with Eupheus Learning.

The first story ‘The Mouse sees the World’ used clever symbolism and reminded us that it is the best if we stay at home during these covid times. In the story a mouse who was searching for a companion to see the world, came across various animals during his journey through the jungle. His adventure took a twist when he met a cat and then realised his mistake. His exposing himself to the unknown world without understanding it put him through a lot of trouble and he eventually hurried back to his home.

The second story for grades 3 to 5 ‘The Dragon Painter’ was about fulfilling one’s dreams by finding one’s passion and working hard to achieve success in it, however big or small. The story was about a painter who was truly passionate about his art, so much so that he brought life to the dragons painted by him on the royal temple’s walls. This impressed the king who appointed him as the royal painter.

The storyteller brought much life to the stories which were enjoyed thoroughly by our children.

                                Experiential Learning in Practice

“Tell me, I forget; show me, I remember; involve me, I understand”

Following a similar ideology, an online training session on ‘Experiential Learning in Practice’ was conducted for the teachers all over India on 8thJune 2021 by CBSE (COE) Delhi East. The session was attended by Ms IshaPandit from Arwachin International School, Dilshad Garden. The spokesperson for the session was Ms Ritu Mehta, Principal Apeejay School, Pitampura, Delhi.

Ms Mehta emphasised upon how hands on experiences influence the learning process. With experiential learning, students are given the opportunity to apply their ideas in a real-world situation where they too play an active role. The learners get involved in the activities and evaluate their learning by using the information useful to them, then further they use this information in other activities and reflect back on the experience they’ve gained. She further stated that students can get engaged in experiential learning through activities such as international travel, cultural exchanges, museum tours, and project-based learning as per their convenience and time.

She also discussed Kolb’s Cycle of Experiential Learning which has four steps:

                                1. Concrete Experience – Experiencing planned event or ‘doing an activity’, like: role plays, interviews etc.
                                2. Reflective Observation – Engaging in activities that require the child to step back and look at his experience.
                                3. Abstract Conceptualisation – Here, the child reflects back on his experience and use various research methods for other activities.
                                4. Active experimentation – On the basis of his observations and experiences the child moulds all the things and creates something new.

She stated thatfor effective learning to occur, the learner should complete all four stages of the model and no one stage can stand alone as a learning procedure.

She concluded the session by saying ‘Experiential learning is the process of "learning by doing" and is a crucial input for making learning joyful. Students should learn from what they study and use it. It should not be rote learning for them, which they only learn for exams and then forget.’

                                          ‘Working with Learning DISABILITIES’

On June 12, 2021, an online teacher training was conducted by CBSE, COE-Training Headquarters. The resource person was Ms. Anindita Roy. Ms.Anindita Roy, the resource person, talked about the “Commonly found Psychological issues in SchoolGoing Children”. She imparted some very vital information related to Learning Disabilities, like

                                          • LD is a heterogeneous group of disorders that impact listening, speaking, reading, writing, reasoning, math, and social skills.
                                          • A child  suffering with LD will have difficulty in collecting, organizing, or acting on verbal and nonverbal information.
                                          • The child also has trouble understanding or using written or spoken language and this difficulty is due to a neurological difference in brain structure or functioning of it.
                                          • She further informed that there are 4 types of LD- Dyslexia, Dyscalculia, Dysgraphia, and Dyspraxia.
                                          • Apart from LD, ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder) is also a neuro -development disorder.
                                          • It begins before the age of seven and it can continue into adulthood. It basically causes impairment in three areas: Attention, Impulsivity, and Hyperactivity.

She also gave some very interesting tips to keep the kinesthetic learners engaged and focused, like:

                                          • Stretching, warm-ups, jogging on the spot.
                                          • Mad minutes- high activity break
                                          • Hands on activities, etc.

At the end, an assessment was done. It carried some multiple choice questions. It was a very informative session and a good learning opportunity.

The selected material should be age appropriate, as per intellect and experience of the learners. After the selection of the material, the following points need to be kept in mind:

                                                  • Where to connect it with the ongoing lesson?

She also stated the fact that for the optimum utilisation of instructional material, it is necessary for the teacher to prepareherself, her students and instructional material before hand and must have a follow up session.
