                                                                            Understanding Multiple Intelligence

Each student has unique intelligences and different ways to learn. In other words, not every person learns best from a single teaching approach. This was discussed in a webinar- ‘Understanding multiple intelligence’ conducted by Swarup Dutta (COE Pune) on 27th May 21.

Giving students the chance to discover and develop their different intelligences can have a series of benefits for our students, from fostering new talents to becoming more involved and active learners; developing their capacity to recognize, and almost more importantly value their individual strengths; or guiding them into becoming confident, successful and accomplished adults in their field of choice.

‘watch the character, for they become destiny’.

At last, he encouraged everyone to be patient, change our thinking and words to bring positive change in our lives.
At the end, an assessment was done. It carried some multiple-choice questions. It was indeed a very informative session and a good learning platform.

"Learning is the process whereby knowledge is created through the transformation of experience.

                                                                                                                                                    David Kolb.

CBSE provides every teacher a perfect platform to enhance his / her skills by organising various workshops or webinars. A webinar covering the most important topic – experiential learning in practice, was conducted by the resource person Mrs. Padma Srinivasan, on May 23, 2021. Many teachers from all over the country attended this webinar and Mrs. Shuchi Kaushik from Arwachin International School got this opportunity to attend the webinar.

The resource person started the webinar by explaining the meaning of experiential learning. She said that the teacher should only be a facilitator who ensures that the children are on right path. Teachers should create a situation where children will learn by experience. She explained Kolb's learning cycle (1984) of thinking, acting, experiencing and reflecting. She highlighted the different stages of Kolb's experiential learning-

                                              Stage-1. Concrete experience (doing/having experience)

Stage-2. Reflect (reflective observation on the basis of past experience and conceptual understanding)

                                              Stage-3. Conceptualize (think abstract conceptualization)

Stage -4. Active Experimentation (engaging directly in authentic situation/ trying out of experience)

She also discussed components like joy for learning, activity-based learning, art integrated learning, collaborative learning etc.She shared some videos related to Science and also to Sportsto show how children can learn through activities. She also enlightened everyone with the pedagogy of experiential learning; what shouldn't be done during the activities and during this process. In the end, few MCQ questions based on the workshop were asked.

Overall, it was a great experience for the teachers. It will definitely enhance their competencies of experiential learning and help them plan better, manage their classes and build a strong relationship with their students.

Mr. Nag explained the meaning and advantages of experiential learning and how we can implement it in classroom for every subject. It is an effective process of learning through previous experiences. He explained that when we engage students in hands-on experiences and reflection, they are able to connect knowledge gained in the classroom to the real world situations. Experiential learning can be inculcated in the pedagogy of every subject according to the need of every child.

Various examples were cited by him to clear the concept more precisely. The session was informative and interactive.

Learning that is considered “experiential” which contains all the following elements:

                                                  • Opportunities for students to take initiative, make decisions, and be accountable for the results.
                                                  • Opportunities for students to engage intellectually, creatively, emotionally, socially, or physically.
                                                  • A designed learning experience that includes the possibility to learn from natural consequences, mistakes, and successes.

A well quoted statement became the highlight of the workshop conducted by CBSE Training Unit on 23rd May ’21, on the Topic-“Experiential Learning in practice”. The resource person was Ms. Padma Srinivasan, a master trainer of CBSE on Adolescence Education. It was attended by Mrs. Mansipriya of our School.

Ms Padma began the session by defining Experiential learning as an Inter-disciplinary learning which is an active engagement between the inner world of the person and the outer environment. She discussed Prof. Kolb’s learning cycle which means to first PLAN, DO, REVIEW, REFLECT and CONCLUDE. Further discussing Kolb’s learning styles, she said in experiential learning the teacherbecomes a facilitator, who helps learners balance between experiencing things and constructing knowledgeat their own pace. It leads to accelerated learning by hands on doing, giving arts and sports integrated assessment, story -telling based pedagogy among others. It is beyond traditional method of teaching which helps to think, experience, practice and sharing rather than content.

Role of Theatre & Drama in Classroom

Centre of Excellence, CBSE, Bengaluru organized an online training session for the teachers all over India on 21st May 2021 on ‘Role of Theatre & Drama in Classroom’ which was attended by Mrs. Prabhjyot Kaur of Arwachin International School. The resource person of the session was Mr. Sandeep Pai, Principal Surana Vidyalaya & an expert in Dramatics with an experience of 19 years in the field of Theatre and Drama.

The resource person commenced the session stating the reasons for including this topic in teachers’ training and said that theatre is the most effective way to handle a class as this teaching pedagogy focuses on three types of learners – Visual learners, Auditory learners & Kinesthetic learners. It is student centred learning and must be incorporated in the classroom teaching by the teachers of all subjects, be it language or any other major subject or even any additional subject like Computer Science. Mr Pai gave a brief explanation of what theatre or dramatic teaching is. He laid stress on the following four points in theatre & drama teaching:-

                                                        • A teacher becomes an actor.
                                                        • A teaching aid becomes an effective usage of props.
                                                        • Body language is important for both actor and teacher.
                                                        • Voice and its modulation is an art which a teacher can use effectively.

He then introduced the basic theatre techniques to the teachers with a variety of examples, activities and even games that can not only enhance students’ interest in learning but also their creativity. He made the teachers aware about the importance & benefits of ROLE PLAY.

The resource person was very energetic and lively keeping the learners engaged throughout the session by presenting his innovative ideas of including drama or theatre in different subjects. He himself used a number of props during the session and demonstrated the use of pitch, volume, tone, body language & voice modulation (the main elements used in drama) while training the teachers. It was really a very enriching, enlivening and fruitful session.

They broadenourmind, engage, provoke, inspireandultimately, connectus.Storytelling is a unique way for students to develop an understanding, respect and appreciation for other cultures, and can promote  positive attitude in people.

An online workshop was organised by CBSE on the topic: Storytelling in Classroom on 21st May, 2021. It was attended by Mrs. Leena Sharma. The resource person was Ms. Deepa Dogra.

Remembering isolated and disconnected facts and concepts is more difficult than recalling this type of content in a story because the information is presented in a coherent and connected way.

An online teacher training was conducted by COE, AJMER and the resource person was Mrs. BhavishaHirani on May 15, 2021. The topic of webinar was Bloom’s Taxonomy and it’s Application. It was attended by MrsUsha Chauhan of Arwachin International School.

Mrs. Hirani, the resource person, talked about the classification system arranged in hierarchy and the categorization of intellectual skills important to learning. The session was a quick recap of the fact that Bloom’s Taxonomy was based on three important domains- the Cognitive domain, Affective domain and the Psychomotor domain and each needs to be mastered before progressing to the next.

She also discussed the 6 cognitive levels with complexity growing from basic level to highest level. Bloom’s revised taxonomy by Lorin Anderson was very informative. It showed that how with just a slight rearrangement, the taxonomy turned to be a reflection of a more active form of thinking – Noun to Verbs.

At the end, an assessment was done. It carried some multiple choice questions. It was a very informative session and a good learning opportunity.
