Innovative methods for students to teach Ethics and Integrity Centre of Excellence

Innovative methods for students to teach Ethics and Integrity Centre of Excellence

CBSE, East Delhi organized an online training session for the teachers on 15th July 2020 on ‘Ethics & Integrity-Innovative methods for students to teach Ethics and Integrity’. Mrs Surya Laxmi attended the session. The resource person was Mr. Parveen Kumar who is an innovative and a great administrator. He started the session with a quote, “ENDS JUSTIFY THE MEANS’. He further explained that we live in an age where ‘The end justifies the means’ has become the mantra of far too many adults who are the role models for the children. The following were the takeaways of the session:

                1. The best way to teach ethics and integrity to students is by being their role models. When these values are reinforced in the class and connected with subjects and lessons, the assimilation is better. It strengthens their value system.

                • He beautifully explained about the Compass Advantage, which is a model designed for engaging families, schools and communities in the principles of positive youth development. The Compass Advantage has the following 8 parts like integrity, resourcefulness, creativity, empathy, curiosity, sociability, resilience and self-awareness.

                • Making the students believe in themselves. Then dishonesty and disrespect will no longer make sense to them. Living with integrity becomes a way of life. Thus, all in all, the training was highly beneficial and successful in empowering the teachers with the fact that it’s of utmost importance to uphold ethics and integrity in all walks of life and more so in the field of academics if we want to create a safe, secure, prosperous, balanced and happy society.

                      CBSE WORKSHOP

Classroom Management-Content Management in Class - Teaching Style

                      “Learning comes before Teaching”

CBSE conducted a training session for the teachers all over India on 12th July 2020 on Classroom Management- Content Management in class - Teaching Style’ which was attended by Mrs. Prabjyot Kaur, Mrs. Anju Sirohi and Mrs. Mansi Priya of Arwachin International School. The resource person of the session was none other than Mrs Swapna Nair, the Principal of our school.

Beginning with the role of a teacher from a guide to a scaffolder, Mrs Nair highlighted that an efficient and effective teacher is the one who works sequentially on the overall framework of the child. Effective teachers establish an effective learning classroom which provides an orderly environment for the academic, moral, social and emotional development of the children. She asserted that the classroom management has mainly three basic features - Content, Conduct and Covenant. Content includes curriculum planning, instructional designing, physical environment, time management and teaching style; Conduct means the rules and regulations for a class and the class discipline and Covenant refers to the kind of relationship between a teacher and a student and student-student relationship.

She very well proved using various instances that classroom management & organization play an integral part in creating a happy classroom where children have holistic learning. She also stated that the principles of classroom management depends on the willingness of the teacher to own, observe and share the responsibility of the class by setting long and short-term goals and knowing the behaviour of the class.

Speaking about the teaching style which depends on the VARK theory (Visual, Auditory, Reading and writing, Kinesthetic learners), she said that it can be formal, authoritative, instructional, delegated, facilitatory or blended. She said that the blended style, being the best of teacher-centred and student-centred learning style, incorporates the 21st century skills i.e creative thinking, flexibility, adaptability, problem solving etc.

The teachers were motivated to reflect upon and test their own teaching style going through a link shared by our Principal and the key message given to the teachers by her at the end was to set goals, make schedule, revisit and revise plans to create and work for the overall development of our children through effective classroom management strategies. It was an extremely wonderful & fruitful session for all the teachers who attended it.

                        Webinar on Experiential Learning

                        NEW

                        Webinar on Experiential Learning

On 12th July’20, CBSE held a webinar for teachers. The topic was- Experiential Learning. The resource person was Ms. Suchitra Shyjinth. It was attended by Ms Natasha Sharma and Mrs. Rumela Roy. As it is well known “Tell me, I forget; show me, I remember; involve me, I understand.”, the same message was the essence of the webinar. Ms. Shyjinth emphasised upon making a classroom a place full of hands-on experience. She said that experiential learning takes place when a person involved in an activity looks back and evaluates it, determines what was useful or important to remember and uses the information to perform another activity. This is so because we do not learn from experience, we learn from reflecting on the experience. The ability reflect/ evaluate and analyse are most important for learning.
She further said that the main mantra should be- ‘Learning from falling’, that is to say that when we fall, we understand our mistake and learn better for the next time. The age of ‘suppose’ is gone. The learners must experience hands-on and not imagine- ‘suppose we had a plant here….’ and so on. And since the teacher is the only source of knowledge for the learner in the class, it is her responsibility to provide him/her with an experience he/she will remember for life-time.
She further discussed David Kolb’s Experiential Learning Model which involves the following four steps-

                        1. Activity- What happened?
                        2. Reflection- What did I experience?
                        3. Conceptualization- Why did that happen?
                        4. Application- What do I do next?

Next Mrs. Shyjinth compared the Bloom’s taxonomy with 21st Century Taxonomy. While Bloom’s Taxonomy Begins with Knowledge and ends with Evaluation, the later begins with Remembering and ends with creating. Which means that one must change with age old techniques owing to the current scenario and needs of the learner.
We must remember that while creating a lesson plan in Experiential Learning it is very important to be aware of the link between the learning outcome and the activity planned and further moving into the Kolb’s Cycle.
She concluded the session by saying
‘Everybody is a genius, but if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will live its whole life believing that it is stupid.’- Albert Einstein.

                          CBSE WORKSHOP ON CLASSROOM MANAGEMENT

The concept of classroom management is broader than that of discipline. To enhance the understanding of teachers about classroom management, an online workshop was organized by CBSE on 12th July, 2020 which was attended by Mrs. Leena Sharma. The main objective of the training was to understand the importance of classroom management, its principles and components and the various factors affecting it.
The speaker, Mr. B.K. Singh, talked about various managerial skills and techniques which would help the teachers to establish classroom order and discipline. He believed that efficient teachers need to establish an effective learning environment in the classroom that keeps the students engaged and hence they show positive behaviour. Teachers need to create an effective teaching style which would enhance the teaching learning process and also develop a personal plan of action for effective classroom management. HE suggested various techniques like teachers need to be physically and mentally prepared to face various challenges in managing the classroom. They should circulate frequently in the class. They should provide a safe and comfortable learning environment. They need to be creative and imaginative in daily lessons. The class should be interactive to promote learning which leads to enjoyment as well as discipline in the class and keeps the students engaged.
The speaker also explained the difference between classroom management and classroom organization and believed that both are equally important. They establish and sustain an orderly environment in the classroom. They facilitate social and emotional growth of students. He also believed that effective classroom management strategies serve both as prevention and intervention methods that promote positive outcomes in students.
The session was very informative and ended on the quote “Unplanned teaching and learning is a recipe of wasting time.”

Parent’s cooperation in clinical assessment is a must as an educator can identify the student’s areas of need and determine his strengths and knowledge.

Parents also need to create a space where the child feels safe and they need to show their trust in their child.  Dr. Hornsby’s early warning signs at school and various strategies to help and support of children with learning disabilities were also discussed during the session.

It was an informative session for teachers and parents.

The session was attended by the teacher of Arwachin International School, Mrs. Surya Laxmi. The resource person of the training,Mrs. Sarita Singh, was very informative. The session began with an important notion that values are not born but grow with age and time. It was explained that children’s behaviour largely depends on the exemplified act of elders rather than on the concepts of values taught to them under a comfortable situation. Several possibilities of inculcating values while teaching language, science and mathematics were discussed. It was suggested that at primary level there is no need to have an exclusive hour for teaching value education rather it could be an integral part of the routine teaching.
Values can be imbibed consciously by linking ethics to curricular areas. The following examples related to various subjects were shared:-

                                          1. Languages- story and dramatisation on social evils.
                                          2.Science-values behind scientific research.
                                          3. History-facing historical issues and reacting to them.
4.Social Science, Geography – how different living conditions affect cultures, value systems and behaviour.
                                          5. Physical Education – competition versus co-operation in sports, sporting/team spirit.

The spokesperson stressed on the need of integrating values in the curriculum for the holistic development of the learners.
As someone has rightly said, “ It is not that you read a book, pass with an examination and finish with education. The whole life, from the moment you are born to the moment you die, is a process of learning.”

CBSE held a workshop on Multiple Intelligence on 8th July 2020 which was attended by Ms. Deepshikha Ghosh. The speaker,Dr. Sridevi Pradeep Thashnath, discussed about Howard Gardner theory of Multiple Intelligence. She explained about the nine types of intelligences. She said that we cannot force a child to learn in a particular manner so being a teacher we need to explore different methods keeping in mind Howard Gardner’s theory. The session started with Alvin Toffler’s quote“The illiterate of the 21st century will not be those who cannot read and write, but those who cannot learn, unlearn, and relearn" Being a teacher, we get an opportunity to nourish children and consider them as sacred beings. But in this pandemic situation, teaching is a challenge as teachers have to present themselves virtually. Nowadays teachers need to work as a facilitator or as a cheerleader who inspire the children. A teacher should make a class active and give importance to life skills. Peer tutoring and hands-on learning methods should be practiced rather than feeding information which they can easily get from the digital platforms. A teacher should always keep in mind that no child in a class is less intelligent but as a teacher she needs to learn, unlearn and relearn the methods of teaching.
It was indeed an informative session which helped the teachers to get answers of many questions which keep arising in their mind.

It was presented by the resource person Ms. Seema Behl whose approach during the session was on the role of happiness which is created when a teacher has a positive outlook towards different situations in the classroom. There is a strong link between happiness and success and happy students tend to learn better.

Overall the session motivated the teachers to scatter smile as students often need a push to do well. Other activities undertaken were cut and paste with newspaper, nail art, mehendi designs, and other pattern designs using sketch pens. ‘Vocal’ sessions were taken by Mrs. Yogjyoti Rohtagi. Children learnt some great values and shlokas .They also learnt ‘mangalgeet’ and prayed for the safety of the world. They practised Shlokas like “KarageVaste Lakshmi” which brought serenity in students.. This year’s summer camp inherited the success of past years and was satisfactorily accomplished. Its completion boasts about the merits of the whole-hearted dedication of all teachers and participants. Teachers were well prepared for the mammoth task and the students were equally enthusiastic in their participation. The camp was indeed a wonderful experience for everyone alike.

On 3rd July’20, a webinar was organised by Ratna Sagar for primary English teachers. It was headed by an eminent resource person, Ms. Sangita Kanjilal and was attended by Ms. Natasha Sharma, Mrs. Rumela Roy, Mrs. Isha Pandit and Mrs. Leena Chadda.

The agenda of the webinar was to help the teachers understand the basics of teaching English to young learners.

As it was once said by Albert Einstein - ‘I never teach my pupils; I only attempt to provide the conditions in which they can learn.’ The same was emphasised upon all throughout the discussion. According to Ms. Kanjilal, no child comes with a manual and therefore every child has an inborn ability to understand everything around him. She further said that learning is an automated process. Children learn from their surroundings. They can be helped, but they cannot be made to learn, therefore they must be provided with such opportunities where they come out of their comfort zones and achieve their goal of life. They should be challenged. They should be made to experience such activities or techniques where they willingly adopt English as their main source of communication.

Ms. Kanjilal also stressed upon the following techniques which may be put into usage for better interaction in an English classroom-

                                                              a) Picture composition for preposition.

                                                              b) Picture composition for sentence structure.

                                                              c) Art integration

                                                              d) Usage of synonyms/simplified word formation

The webinar was highly informative and the teachers had a great experience of being a part of such a wonderful session.

                                                                03Jul
