Mindfulness…..An Educational Pursuit

The SCHOLARD organized a webinar on Mindfulness…An Educational Pursuit on 30th April,2020. The speaker was Swami Anand Krishna who is an educational and spiritual humanist from Indonesia. He is the founder of One Earth School, Bali and Anand Ashram Foundation. He is also an ambassador of peace at The Universal Peace Federation.

Swami ji believed that this is a good time to reflect and introspect on our education system. He believed that our education system is a cleansing process. It is the responsibility of the educationists to develop new ways of love and to chisel away all the bad memories of students’ past and present life. These memories can be from the time when they were in their mother’s womb or from their childhood experiences. He focused on creating a system which is individualized as per the needs of each and every child.

He talked about his vision “One Earth, One Sky, One Humankind” – his interpretation of an age old Sanskrit Maxim, “VasudaivaKutumbakam”, this entire world is but one big family. He further believed that instead of dividing children on the basis of religion, we need to educate them about different religions so that they can appreciate teachings of other religions and even learn from them. Thus, there is a need to have a comprehensive educational system.

He also laid emphasis on the importance of meditation. It can inculcate values in a child through which he can decide what is good or bad for himself.

Swami ji quoted, “Meditation is not about running away from life. It is confronting life’s hurdles and overcoming them.”There is a need to develop a certainprogramme for teachers in order to develop the power of discretion within them so that they can face any challenge in life. They should be able to deal with the prevailing situations.

While answering a participant’s question about choosing between mind and heart, Guruji advised us to follow our Buddhiand neither mind nor heart. Buddhi (intelligence) is our transformed mind. If we have to live in this world, then we have to be mindful.

The session ended with an enriching Question Answer round with the participants. This enlightening session was attended by Mrs. Surya Laxmi, Mrs. Rumela Roy, Mrs. Leena Sharma, Mrs. Sandhya Pandey, Ms. Aditi Sharma, Ms. Merin and Mrs. Bhawna Sharma.

A clear night sky offers an ever-changing display of fascinating objects to see — stars, constellations, and bright planets, often the moon, and sometimes special events like meteor shower.

One such opportunity was given by Nehru Science centre,Mumbai that conducted  night sky observation  sessions  on 25th April 2020 through Facebook Live , to see Jupiter and its four satellites  from 3:00 to 3:45 A.M and Saturn and its rings from 4:00 to 4:45 A.M. The main purpose behind the session was to make people aware about the amazing facts of the planets and to make the quarantine time of Indians better and informative. We Arwachinians never miss a chance to learn new things.  Our Science teachers, Mrs. Leeja Srijil, Mrs. Sunita Suri, Mrs. Sutekshna , Hindi teacher,  Mrs.Anita  Pandit and students from different classes watched the session along with 3.8k people watching the  sessions from all over the world. In the first session, we were able to behold Jupiter and its 3 satellites namely, Callisto,  Europa,  and Ganymede.

Unfortunately, we could not observe the 4th satellite, since it was positioned behind Jupiter at that time. In the second session, we observed Saturn, the jewel of the solar system, and its beautiful rings. An added bonus was to see Mars and also locate the constellation, the Great Bear.

The naked-eye sky is full of astronomical treasures, and it gets even better with a little magnification. But for observing night sky our teachers and students didn’t go out and buy a high-power telescope but a pair of binoculars was sufficient to see these amazing celestial objects.

Thus, the enthusiasm and passion for learning has not stopped even when the school is closed. It was an incredible and spectacular experience to be cherished for life.

Building Holistic Activity-Based Learning Environment for Early years (3-8)

              NEW

              Building Holistic Activity-Based Learning Environment
              for Early years (3-8)

The Oxford University Pressorganized a webinar on 23rd April 2020 on, ‘Building Holistic Activity-Based Learning Environment for Early years (3-8)’, through a webinar and the Spokesperson was Mrs. Sonia Relia. She has a vast experience of more than 30 years as an early school trainer and teacher facilitator. It was attended by Ms. Natasha Sharma. Mrs. Neeraj Sharma, Mrs. PriyaParhak, Mrs. Jyoti Yadav, Mrs. Bhawna Verma, Mrs. DeepaliDhingra. Mrs. ShuchiMathur, Mrs. Usha Chauhan, Mrs. Bharti Pokhriyal, Mrs. PriyaMehrotra  Mrs. Neelam Nanda and Mrs. Neha Arora.

The focus of the webinar was to enable the teachers and mothers to do activities with the children with minimum available things and zero wastage during the lockdown period, as we do not have much resources at our disposal. She said that we can teach the concepts like small-big, thick- thinor less and more easily with the things available in the kitchen. Also in EVS, rather than teaching the names of fruits and vegetables and asking them to rote learn them, it will be more functional to teach them life skills like personal hygiene, good manners, importance of cleanliness, importance of nature, perseverance of trees etc. through easily depicted stories with the help of household objects. She further suggested that flashcards can be made with the help of pictures cut from old, used books. They can be made with help of sheets/cards not bigger than 10 by 10 cm, decorated with the help of things like chart papers or any coloured paper, ice -cream sticks or anything else easily available at home. The major stress was on learning by doing as that stays with the children for a longer period of time and also discourages them to just copy and rote learn things.

Talking about the teaching learning resources, she said that when we give too many options to the children, we actually make them more restless. This distracts them and confuses them. Too many options can never be helpful in makingchildren alert and mindful. She said that the very basic tools like a 'dafli' or a 'kartal' can be used to deliver lessons with great impact. According to her, the purpose of teaching should be the concept that needs to be taught and not the lavish display of equipment used.

Shealso stressed upon the importance of music in the process of teaching and learning and said that music is very important at the kindergarten level and stories or  any topic told in small jingles leave a lifelong impact and impression on the minds of the children. In this regard she also talked about Kinoline which is a

system that works with low budgets and large groups using simple activity kits and resources which are easily accessible to teachers.

Here every letter stands for itself like

K -stands for Knowledge and information

              I -stands for Ideas

N -stands for Nail it!! and identify key areas

O -stands for Organise and plan

              L -stands for Limited budget

              E -stands for Environment building

A -stands for Apply - do - learn

R -stands for Reinforcement and resilience

N -stands for Now!!! Change Now!!!

She said that if children are given different space for everything like activity area, story area etc, it also has its own impact on their learning.

Talking about phonics she stressed upon the fact that relation between the sounds and symbols is very important. We cannot teach a child to write before being able to read and he cannot read if he has never been introduced tothe letters in the form of pictures and things related to them. All this in-turn makes a child an impressive writer.

Overall, it was a great experience and a very refreshing one as well. We got to learn several new things and  we would like to thank our Principal for giving us this opportunity.

                  EARTH DAY 50

“Earth Day is a day of gratitude to Mother Earth and a day to reiterate our firm resolve to keep our planet clean and green.Save earth, save mankind”        - Narendra Modi

We celebrated the 50th anniversary of Earth Day on April 22,2020 in the midst of a pandemic, with the world slowed and hobbled by Covid-19. Due to the coronavirus pandemic, this year's celebrations are limited to our immediate and virtual surroundings.

Even though we could't celebrate our planet with community tree plantings, cleanups , rallies this year, there were indoor activities to enjoy within the vicinity of our homes that are good for the planet and good for our health.

Earth Day celebration this year may be unusual, but there's no shortage of enjoyable activities that are good for our health and the planet and that will keep us safe during a pandemic. Arwachinians celebrated Earth Day raising awareness about the importance of protecting our planet and taking action by composing poems, writing articles, drawing and painting. They strongly sent a message that we all should make an effort to live within our means when it comes to natural resources and we still have time to make a difference; going forward, we must act to fulfill our hope to preserve our Planet Earth.

                    Pre-Primary Interface-2020

The nature works in its own rhythm. We breathe in and out continuously through life. The sun rises and sets. Night is followed by another day. Seasons come and go. So do the years.

Although the world has come to a halt, due to the brutal and devastating attack of corona virus(Covid-19), we at ArwachinInternational School have taken tiny steps and move ahead and commence the new session-2020-21.

We must ensure that nothing stops our growth and learning. Therefore the teachers of the Pre-primary wing organised two detailed interactive sessions for the parents of the wing on 18th and 19th April’2020. The new members were briefed about the working of the school and the teaching techniques used by the teachers. They were introduced to the curriculum that will be followed throughout the year.

It was a delight to see the enthusiasm of the parents. They participated with great zeal and enthusiasm. Full support and guidance were ensured by the teachers and the parents were at ease too.

The session was very informative and interactive and was highly appreciated by the parents.
