                INTER-HOUSE DEBATE COMPETITION

                CLASSES: VI-VIII

                DATE: 23rd AUGUST 2014

Debate is an organized clash of good ideas. Each side employs worthwhile evidence to promote their viewpoint and to rebut the ‘flawed’ evidence advanced by the other side.  It is probably one of the best learning tools one could possibly have. No matter what profession one enters, he/she needs to acquire the skills for debating. Keeping this in mind, debate competitions are held in Arwachin International School every year to give the students the tools they need to be more successful. Debating helps the students to enhance their critical thinking skills and also improve their speaking skills and make them more confident.

This year the Annual Inter-house Debate Competition for classes VI- VIII was held on 23rd August 2014 in the school auditorium. The motion for the debate was:

“Advertisements are useless, boring and even misleading”.

The participants who spoke for the motion were:

                Shefalika Ghosh                              VIIIC                                    TILAK HOUSE

                Ridhima Mahajan                            VIIIB                                    SHASTRI HOUSE

                Aditi Yadav                                     VIIC                                     BOSE HOUSE

                Manu Rai                                        VIA                                      TAGORE HOUSE

The participants who spoke against the motion were:

                Shruti Kishore                                  VID                                     TILAK HOUSE

                Aryan Jain                                        VIA                                     SHASTRI HOUSE

                Preeti Thapliyal                               VIIIC                                    BOSE HOUSE

                Shruti Rao                                       VIIIC                                   TAGORE HOUSE

The debaters had put their best effort and convincingly expressed their views. They all answered the rebuttal questions with utter promptness and confidence.

The competition was judged by Ms Hanit Kaur, Mrs Kanika Tiwari and Mrs Mousumi Lahiri.

                  The result was:

Bose House was declared the winner with 126 points

Tilak House bagged the second prize with 114 points

Tagore House stood third with 110 points

Preeti Thapliyal of VIII-C was declared as the Best Debater in the competition.

The event ended with the highly motivating words of Mrs Gracy Peter, our respected Principal who congratulated the participants, appreciated the audience and encouraged all the other students to be a part of the competition in the years to come.

The chief speaker and counselor, Mr. Jitin Chawla, introduced the main topic of the day through a PPT on the same, promising that the same would be e-mailed to the participants within a few working days. The PPT described several new and old courses being offered by DU to its students. He mentioned the new concept of a meta universities being tried in various universities of the NCR.

A budding author, Karan Varma talked of the virtues of maintaining constancy with changes. He advocated constructive change coupled with continuity of all that is good in the old tradition. He noted that there are winds of change  being felt everywhere and it is conviction that is to be preferred to career. “Go where your heart goes and your career shall follow you.”

The same thoughts echoed through the talks of Dr. Saini, the Principal of DPS RK Puram and Dr. Varshney, the Dean South Campus, D U. They said that the students must be encouraged and left free to follow their inclinations and that itself would show them the way forward.Dr. Varshney added that  the fallacy that there is some difference between  the teaching, the faculty, the libraries or the infrastructure of the North and the South campuses of D U must be corrected and the parents must be counseled that there is no truth in the rumours.

Dr.  Varsheny also emphasized the fact that what matters ultimately is the curriculum provided by the universities: what counts is the student’s inter-disciplinary knowledge of subjects: what holds the student in good stead is his/her conviction. He also said that the university is trying to give academics a philosophical depth and vision.

Dr. Saini added by saying that the Indian students must shed the herd mentality of flocking to foreign universities. He asserted that we have the best of faculty here and those foreign universities treat India as a ripe marketing ground .

It  was brought to the notice of the participants that  vocational courses of CBSE are not considered for admission to D U. Those students are supposed to pursue vocational training and are expected to join vocational institutions for diplomas.

The world is changing and we all must adapt to technology in a big way if we wish move abreast of modern times. The future of work are going to be communication, luxury  and fashion business and any one in the business of counseling must be aware of the changes.

Dr. Rehan from Jamia Milia Universities acquainted the audience with the courses being offered by the universities. He sought to dispel some  of the misunderstanding regarding his university.

Mr. Jitin Chawla concluded the conclave by introducing several streams of studies being offered by D U and several upcoming universities across the NCR.

Pro-Social Peer Moderator Meet on Media Literacy

It has been seen that children and adolescents respond best to their peers, and there by developing a pro-social peer program where students can learn from their own peers is of prime importance. Pro-Social Peer Moderator Meet is a unique platform where through intensive and interactive workshops; students from various schools come together to learn new skills and reach out to their classmates and juniors- to learn to be the role models for the future. On 12th August 2014, senior students of different schools from Delhi and NCR region were invited by Fortis Hospital, Noida for this meet.

The meet was conducted under the aegis of eminent psychiatrist, Dr. Sameer Parikh, an expert working with school children. The topic of discussion was “Media Literacy”. The program involved a group of three students, two from class 9th- Sunidhi Srivastava and Vinayak Dhruv, and one from class 11th- Nupur Sharma, along with a teacher moderator, Ms. Thanya Yohannan. A three hour interactive session was conducted by the team of mental health professionals of Fortis hospital, with the help of power point presentations, posters, role plays and interactive sessions.

New Age Social Media bombards each one of us with thousands of media messages everyday and adolescent population is its single largest consumer. The media has been implicated in increased aggression, unhealthy lifestyle/life choices and lowered self-esteem. The interactive session helped the students differentiate between more legitimate and reliable sources of information and entertainment, urged the students to ask pertinent questions like who is the advertisement made for or newspaper article written for? And who writes it? Who gets the profit? And who is the target audience? It was stressed that the children have to learn to develop specific skills of critical viewing and decision making and also how to follow safe media practices.

The meet concluded with the lunch and an informal chat and a promise to stay in touch and spread awareness amongst people.
